Wall and sidewall flashing repair covers the spot where a sloped roof runs into a vertical wall. It is the same problem as a chimney, and on a lot of homes with no chimney at all, it is where the leak really is: a porch roof against the house, a dormer cheek wall, or a garage roof that tucks into a second story.
The correct detail is step flashing under every shingle course, with the siding or a separate counter flashing lapping over it. At the bottom of the wall, where the roof edge meets the siding, there has to be a kick-out flashing, a small bent diverter that pushes water into the gutter instead of down behind the siding. Missing kick-outs are one of the most common causes of rotted wall sheathing we see.
On stucco and stone veneer homes, the fix often means cutting back the finish to reach the flashing, then patching it after the metal is right. On vinyl or fiber cement siding, we pull the bottom courses, reflash, and reinstall the siding.
